My trip to Cambodia

In February, I traveled to a city called Siem Reap in Cambodia during my five days off. I chose this city because the weather was supposed to be nice. I bought my plane tickets and booked my hotel five nights before my departure. I had two stops on the way there, and three stops on the way back.

I chose a cheap hotel in the center of the city. The room was dark, but clean. One boy spoke Japanese.

I took a vehicle called an auto rickshaw called tuk-tuk. It was the type drawn by a motorcycle. The driver spoke English. People in Cambodia generally spoke English, so I didn’t have to speak Cambodian. They also accepted American dollars and I received Cambodian banknotes only as a change. However, they didn’t accept any banknotes with a rip, even if it was tiny.

I visited Angkor Wat, a famous archeological site. A young man spoke to me at the entrance and took me to many spots, explaining different things to me. However, he demanded a big amount of tips later. I gave him only two dollars.

I visited Angkor Thom. These ruins were huge, so I visited only the central area, including Bayon temple. There were many faces engraved in the rocks. There were many interesting reliefs about peoples’ lives on the wall surrounding the temple. Groups of tourists gathered around each relief. The explanation of their guide was useful, but I had to wait a long time to take pictures.

I also visited Ta Prohm, the ruins of another temple. The building was partially covered by tropical trees. I liked the atmosphere.

I also visited the Killing Fields. Many skulls were piled up in the stupa. I realized that many people were killed here not long ago.

On the last day, I visited Angkor Wat again to see the sunrise. The building and the pinkish colored sky were mirrored on the pond, which was very beautiful.

I tried some typical Cambodian dishes, such as chicken soup with red peppers and coconut milk. I also tried a barbecue with the meat of seven kinds of animals such as crocodiles and sharks. I had ramen too in a Japanese restaurant. I also went to a buffet restaurant where I saw Cambodian dances, but I didn’t like the food there.

It was hot every day. The center of the city was crowded with many people, and I thought it was an active city. I’d like to visit this city again and bike to old temples.
