In Memory of Our Dogs

We used to have two labradors, Laura and Mark.

Laura was a white female. She was intelligent. She was able to sit, lie, stay, heel, jump, and go fetch something according to our order. She could also understand a lot of words. She hated shampoo, and as soon as she heard that word, she would go up to the second floor and pretend to sleep on the sofa. What she really loved, however, was food. We brought her up indulgently, so she was very spoiled. For example, when I would have a meal at the dining table, she would often jump up on my chair behind me and lean forward to check the dishes.

Mark was a black male. He was one year younger than Laura, and unlike her, he was extroverted and rash. He was able to do almost the same tricks as Laura, but he couldn’t concentrate on our commands and was often distracted by something. He liked balls and chased them. He often barked at dogs and people that were walking by our house. However, he was very loyal to my family members. He often lay on his back and he looked happy when we stroked his belly. He was acrophobic and was also afraid of the sound of fireworks. As soon as he heard the sound, he would start to tiptoe and hide in the corner of the bathroom.

They were important members of the family, and we enjoyed our time with them. Unfortunately, Mark suddenly died of osteosarcoma at the age of 11 and Laura died of pneumonia at the age of 13. We held memorial services and funerals for them, and placed their ashes in the repository.
